Wow! There are a lot of subscription websites targeted for the machine quilter. Many offer fantastic perks like video classes, discounts on goods, and the false sense of security and safety from “undesirable activities”. Unfortunately for them but lucky for you, most of this stuff can be found for free via a good search engine.
Some sites give you a bit of both, i.e. free and subscription material. Machine Quilters Resource is one such site. It gives you a TON of valuable free material with some extremely worthwhile subscription perks. Having been a member of both free and subscription sites, I believe that some like Longarmchat.com give almost nothing truly worthwhile for free and most of the subscription material can be easily be found elsewhere for free. Still, there are a couple quilters who like the “pay if you want to play with me” attitude. Seems that approach eventually wears thin with most…
Thank goodness for choices!
FWIW: Since someone posted that I had been banned from LAChat, it may be necessary to expound on that statement.
I was banned for exercising my right to keep MY COPYRIGHTED material off that site. I have the email (and a hard copy) of the exchange which took place where the site owner attempted to suggest that once I posted my instructive material on their site…it was theirs. They only removed it after I suggested I would seek legal assistance in its removal. I was subsequently banned for threatening legal action. Hmm…what choice did I have? Of course, the fact that I helped others expose the total lack of transparency in that site’s mysterious and ever-changing rules no doubt was also a factor in my banning.
Does it not seem fitting that someone who blatantly violated my copyrights years later would now be wholeheartedly supporting a site that seemingly once felt copyright infringement was acceptable?
Since I feel everyone is capable of learning from their mistakes, I would hope the issue of ownership of posted material as well as the big-brother monitoring of blogs in which LAC once participated will no longer be an issue. Still, in retrospect, I realize a subscription site is unnecessary for many, if not most, machine quilters. Thank goodness for the internet and easy access to information!
